Hogan was central to one of the most important legal fights of the media in recent history. In 2012, the popular gossip and news site Gawker published parts of a video with Hogan with sex with the alienated woman of a friend. With the financial support of right -wing technical billionaire Peter Thiel, Hogan sued on the basis of the fact that Gawker had violated his privacy and caused him emotional damage. A jury ruled in his favor and admitted $ 140 million to total damage.

The case drove Gawker Media, one of the determining media brands of his time, in bankruptcy. The flagship location was closed in 2016. Some of his other properties – including Deadspin, Gizmodo and Izebel – remained in operation under new ownership, but never came close to reaching the heights they reached while they were under the Gawker -Paraplu.
